American professional basketball (NBA) player Kyle Anderson played for the Chinese national basketball team.
“Anderson scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds in about 20 minutes of action against Italy in the final of the Trentino Cup four-nation invitational in Italy on Friday,” according to the Hong Kong South China Morning Post.
China lost to Italy 79-61 in that game.
Anderson, whose mother is of Chinese descent, is an active player for the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and was granted Chinese citizenship last month.
“My mother’s grandfather is from Guangdong Province,” Anderson told China Daily in late July.
Yao Ming, president of the Chinese Basketball Association, spearheaded Anderson’s Chinese citizenship.
“All procedures were carried out in compliance with Chinese law and FIBA regulations,” Yao told China Daily. “Anderson is the first naturalized player in Chinese basketball history and will have a good impact on the Chinese national team in the future.”
Anderson will also play for the Chinese national team at the FIBA World Cup later this month. His jersey will be emblazoned with the Chinese name “Li Kaier”.
