Israel pulled off the upset. They defeated Brazil in a thrilling extra-time shootout.

Israel defeated Brazil 3-2 in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 at the Estadio San Juan del Vicentenario in San Juan, Argentina, at 2:30 a.m. ET on Thursday. With the win, Israel advances to the semi-finals, where they will face the winner of the USA-Uruguay.

On the day, Brazil deployed a 4-4-2 formation. Marquinhos and Leonardo were up front, with Martins, Santos, Gomes, and Savio in the midfield. The back four was a combination of Biro, Pedroso, Mendes, and Andre, with Kaike in goal.

The game went into extra time. At the start of the extra time, Brazil regained the lead. In the first two minutes of extra time, Gomes’ cutback was met by a sensational heel pass from Santos. Nascimento finished it off. Israel levelled. In the third minute of extra time, Feingold’s cross from the right was headed home by Shibley.

Israel had taken the lead. In the first minute of extra time, Madmon’s shot was blocked by the defence and Turgeman collected the loose ball, beating two defenders in quick succession before firing a left-footed shot into the net.

Israel missed a crucial chance. Nine minutes into the second half of extra time, Perdoso committed a handball foul and was awarded a penalty kick. Madmon stepped up to take the spot kick, but his effort was saved by the goalkeeper. The match ended with no further goals scored and a thrilling one-goal victory for Israel.
